Aligning Health Partners Around Holistic Care

Client: Maundy Relief

Programme:  Biopsychosocial Training for Frontline Healthcare Workers

Role: Navigating Delivery

Focus: Population Health | Workforce Development | Training and Facilitation

Maundy Relief secured funding to deliver a training programme introducing the biopsychosocial (BPS) approach to frontline healthcare workers across Hyndburn.

The BPS approach recognises that health is shaped not only by medical conditions, but also by psychological wellbeing and social circumstances.

In Hyndburn — where many residents experience complex and interconnected challenges — practitioners are often supporting people whose needs cut across these different aspects of health.

While there were already skilled practitioners and examples of biopsychosocial practice across local organisations, these approaches were often informal and disconnected.

The opportunity was to bring that expertise together through a shared programme, strengthening practitioner confidence and making good practice easier to access, apply and sustain.

  • Researched national best practice — reviewed biopsychosocial training models across the UK to identify effective approaches.

  • Mapped the local landscape — analysed social prescribing provision to understand the current picture in Hyndburn.

  • Delivered tailored practitioner training — designed and delivered a programme for local front-line staff.

  • Captured learning and impact — carried out an independent evaluation of the programme.

  • Shared findings with system leaders — presented recommendations to the regional Health and Wellbeing Board.

  • Staff confidence grew — practitioners felt equipped to look at the whole picture, not just the symptoms

  • Partnerships strengthened — NHS, voluntary sector and council teams are working more closely, creating more joined-up care

  • Funding unlocked — Maudy Relief secured over £500K in additional National Lottery funding, citing the programme’s evidence of best practice.

  • Wider reach secured — Buy-in from local policy makers and additional further investment secured to roll training out more widely across Lancashire
